Mississippi State Bulldogs – Mississippi State and Vanderbilt have played football only 24 times in their respective histories, but the first one was all the way back in 1904 when they played the game in Columbus, MS. Vanderbilt won that contest 61-0 and they didn’t play for another 19 years when they tied 0-0. That must have been a thriller. Overall, MS State does hold the advantage in the series 15-7 with 2 ties.
P.S. My biggest question about this is, where on earth did they play in Columbus? I’ve been there 100 times and the only thing there is the Mississippi University for Women (or “The Dub” as we affectionately know it). It just doesn’t add up! Vandy beating State by 61 in Columbus. It all seems sus! Just sayin’!
Auburn Tigers – This one surprised me as much as the Auburn-Georgia series, but for different reasons. Auburn has played Vanderbilt 45 times in total and the series stands tied at 22-22-1. Can that be right? WOW! I would have never in a million years…
The first time they played one another was in 1893. Auburn won that first meeting, but Vandy went on to have a lot of early success, winning 18 of the first 25 contests.
The new “Admiral” of the Commodores, Head Coach Clark Lea, seems to have kicked Vanderbilt’s “laughing stock” moniker to the curb. Auburn will definitely need to be on the front foot when playing Vandy for the foreseeable future. This year the Tigers and Commodores get after it on November 8th in Nashville, TN.
P.S. Am I the only one who finds it interesting that there are Commodores in central Tennessee?
Tennessee Volunteers – The Tennessee Volunteers and the Vanderbilt Commodores have gone to the gridiron together 116 times since their first meeting on October 21, 1892. Tennessee has a sizeable lead in the series winning 79 times to Vandy’s 33 and there have been 5 ties over the years. An interesting tidbit with this game is that in its 132 year history, it has never been played anywhere other than in Nashville or Knoxville. No off-campus, neutral site nonsense here! That just screams “civic pride” to me.
The rivalry game this season will, more than likely, feature 2 nationally ranked teams and make the volume on this one go up to 11!
