Oklahoma Sooners – Now THIS is a proper rivalry! “The Red River Rivalry” as it’s called now, is one of the truly great rivalries in all of sports let alone college sports. The University of Texas at Austin and Oklahoma University first played this game in1900 and it has been contested in Dallas, annually, since 1929.
As well as for bragging rights, the two schools play for the coveted “Golden Hat” trophy which is awarded to the winner on the field after each contest. 120 times these titans of college football have met with Texas owning an advantage in the series, 64-51 with 5 ties.
This is the only rivalry game that I can speak about with personal memories. I was actually blessed with tickets from a friend of mine. My wife and I went with he and his wife and my life was changed forever. It was 1987 and we had just moved to Irving, TX the year before. The State Fair of Texas and “The Red River Shootout” as it was called back then was almost too much for this country boy from Mississippi to take.
I remember it was a gorgeous October day and my wife was asking lots of questions about the game. She wasn’t totally clueless about football, but her knowledge was built around her little brothers playing in high school. We met while at a university that didn’t have a football program, so that didn’t help. The crux of my knowledge as a child was from my dad’s love of the New Orleans Saints. So as I answered her questions, a man in the row in front of us kept turning around and telling her that I was wrong about pretty much everything. I think my wife believed him to be right, but she thought that I was being chivalrous by trying to help her. Of course, I came away feeling like an idiot. The stuff you remember sometimes, huh? I can’t remember what I had for lunch yesterday, but I remember that from 38 years ago! Lol!
Arkansas Razorbacks – The Razorbacks and Longhorns started duking it out on the gridiron in 1894, playing 80 times over the following 130 years. They played nearly every season until Arkansas joined the SEC in 1992. Texas has won 57 of the 80 games and Arkansas 23.
There doesn’t appear to be a trophy at stake in this game, but don’t say this isn’t a rivalry. Not in front of Arkansans, at least! While Texas has been pre-occupied with Oklahoma in “The Red River Rivalry” and the renewal of their vitriol toward Texas A&M, folks in Fayetteville have been quietly hating the ‘Horns for the 30 years since playing them on a regular basis!
This year’s contest will be played on November 22, 2025 in Austin, TX.
P.S – “Steers Trounce Tough Porkers for 5th Victory” was the headline in the Austin American newspaper after the game in 1946. This IS a rivalry! Just sayin’!
Texas A&M Aggies – While some of the other schools around the conference are being asked to “manufacture” rivalries that didn’t exist in the past, it’s safe to say that the Texas Longhorns are not one of them. The ‘Horns have 3 very legit rivalries that go back well over 100 years. Their first meeting with Texas A&M was on October 19, 1894 when they trounced the Aggies 38-0. The next time they played was on October 22, 1898 when they beat them 48-0. In fact, it wouldn’t be until their 12th meeting, in 1902, that the Aggies scored a single point. That is one crazy auspicious start to a rivalry. Over the years, things for the bunch from College Station did get a bit better, however, Texas owns a commanding lead in the overall series 77-37 with 5 ties.
The annual renewal of the “Lone Star Showdown” was ended in 2011 when the Aggies joined the Southeastern Conference. It would be 13 years before the madness would resume. Although there were attempts made to schedule each other after the split, nothing ever came of it and fans on both sides were forced to continue trolling one another electronically.
Bu Halleluiah, Texas decided to join the SEC themselves starting conference play in 2024. And who was there on their schedule? You guessed it, the Aggies! And the annual rivalry is now a conference game for each and is guaranteed indefinitely.
