Mateer & OU's Future

In week 4, Heisman Trophy hopeful, John Mateer of the resurgent Oklahoma Sooners broke a bone in his right hand, his throwing hand. His right thumb, to be exact. It has been widely reported that Dr. Steven Shin, the “best hand and wrist doctor in the country”, will perform the repair, if he hasn’t done it already. The prognosis is that he will miss a month.

In my opinion, a guy that plays three quarters with a broken thumb on his throwing hand and beats a good Auburn team will not miss the game with their most hated rival, the Texas Longhorns, on October 11th. The Sooner’s team doctors are, I’m sure, adept at creating poultices with dirt, some spit, and probably a small smear of poop from both “Boomer” and “Sooner”. They’ll tape all that up on his hand until it looks like Jason Pierre-Paul’s, but he WILL play against Texas! Oh yes! He will play! (You have to read that last part in your best Wayne Campbell voice. You know, Wayne Campbell? Wayne’s World? Sheesh, I can’t believe I have to explain this stuff!! Lol!)

Actually, I don’t know if he’ll play hurt or not. I get that on Saturday, his adrenaline was pumping, and he was already there and all. I’m from the generation that would have to be almost dead not to play and I think we all know which generation that is! Am I right? Sorry. It will be interesting to see how NIL money AND the imminent draft will affect injury timelines for star players. If any of you Sooner types out there knows, tell me if the scuttlebutt favors Mateer leaving for the NFL after this year.

Anyway, the backup QB is 6’1”, 206 lb. sophomore, Michael Hawkins Jr. from Dallas. I can only imagine that he would love to play against the Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl should Mateer not be ready to go.

For my sister’s and brother in law’s sake, I hope this doesn’t derail their playoff chances. I believe OU is really good and could contend for the National Championship.

Jason Pierre-Paul

P.S. Am I the only one that finds it interesting that Dr. Shin is operating on hands and wrists rather than tibias?
