FSU Manhandles Alabama

I wrote this before week 1 (but didn’t publish it).

I find the Alabama situation at QB fascinating. I’ve seen some interviews and commentary and what I have gleaned from the available information is that Ty Simpson has lost the QB competition in Tuscaloosa for 3 years running and now it’s his turn? I get that the coaching staff says that he didn’t get the job because of his loyalty to the program, but I believe that Kalen DeBoer is on a pretty short leash after last season, so he needs to be right on his evaluation of Mr. Simpson. With Austin Mack coming with DeBoer from Washington, I can’t help but fear a little for Ty Simpson’s immediate future. Not to mention 5 star, true freshman QB, Keelon Russell from Duncanville, TX. Who, by the way, was one of the highest rated recruits in Alabama football history. Let THAT sink in for a minute.

It seems as though my initial assessment may have been fairly accurate. I watched every down of the Florida State game on Saturday and Alabama simply got manhandled. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think for a minute that Ty Simpson was the reason the Crimson Tide were manhandled, but I didn’t get the feeling that anyone on the Alabama sideline had any sense of urgency about imposing their will on FSU. I have a hard time believing that they had 9 months to prepare and over-looked the ‘Noles because they were 2-10 last year. They do have a top 25 recruiting class in and they did some nice work in the transfer portal. Namely their new QB, a brash talking, undersized, 22 year old from Waycross, GA, by way of Boston College and Central Florida. He did, however, impose HIS will on the Alabama defense. These were my notes during the game:

“Nice opening drive by Bama. I feel like Ty Simpson is looking to run before he needs to. Possibly first game jitters. Bama down 17-7 at the half. Ty Simpson is going to have to prove he’s a legit starter in this league. If they don’t come back and win this game, the call for Kalen DeBoer’s head is gonna get loud in a hurry!”

The Crimson Tide defense came away not giving up any TD passes, however, they did give up four rushing touchdowns and only sacked Tommy Castellanos once. In the end, I felt Alabama’s defense came prepared for a pillow fight more than a Power 5 cage match!
