Alma Mater

“On a hallowed hill in Tennessee

Like beacon shining bright

The stately walls of old UT

Rise glorious to the sight.

What torches kindled of that flame

Have passed from hand to hand

What hearts cemented in that name

Bid land to stranger land.

Oh, ever as we strive to rise

On life’s un-resting stream

Dear Alma Mater, may our eyes

Be lifted to that gleam.”

Refrain (after all three verses):

So here’s to you, old Tennessee

Our Alma Mater true;

We pledge in love and harmony

Our loyalty to you.

Traditions

As with all of the schools in the Southeastern Conference, there are plenty of traditions to talk/write about and the University of Tennessee is definitely no exception.

My favorites tend to somehow involve animals. Boomer and Sooner, Bully, UGA, Mike the Tiger, and of course, Sir Big Spur, the cock! However, I feel like there is one that doesn’t get the credit he deserves! Enter “Smokey” Tennessee’s Bluetick Coonhound.

I think it says a lot about an animal if it transcends the word “mascot”. Of course, the LSU Tigers have “Mike the Tiger”, MS State and Georgia have their respective Bulldogs, and Texas has “Bevo” the Longhorn, but the orange clad folks in Knoxville are not called the Tennessee “Bluetick Coonhounds”. They are the Volunteers, but have one of the most recognizable live mascots in the country!

The current mascot patrolling the sidelines of Neyland Stadium on Saturdays in the Fall is “Smokey XI”. As I have said in the past, I feel it’s important to let the people who know more about a subject and who live in it to be the expert, so please read this article by Abby Ann Ramsey of the Daily Beacon, the editorially independent student newspaper of The University of Tennessee.

Interesting Facts & Trivia

  • “Checker Neyland”: A tradition where fans wear orange or white in designated sections of Neyland Stadium during games to create an impressive checkerboard pattern.
  • “Rocky Top”: While not the official fight song, the iconic song is played at every athletic event. It was famously written in just 10 minutes.
  • Know the Truth The university’s motto is the Latin phrase Veritatem cognoscetis et veritas vos liberabit, which means “You will know the truth and the truth shall set you free”.
  • The origin of the “Volunteers” Tennessee is known as “The Volunteer State” because of the large number of volunteer soldiers from the state during the War of 1812. The nickname was officially adopted for the University of Tennessee’s athletic teams in 1905, after a newspaper article referred to the football team as “the Volunteers” following a win in 1902.
  • The Vol Navy This unique game-day tradition involves fans “tailgating” by boat on the Tennessee River, mooring near Neyland Stadium. The tradition began in 1962 when a broadcaster used a boat to avoid traffic, and now hundreds of boats can be seen on the water during major games.
  • A mascot hall-of-famer The costumed version of Smokey was inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.
  • The Torchbearer statue: This statue, located in the center of campus, serves as a testament to the university’s Volunteer Creed: “One that beareth a torch shadoweth oneself to give light to others”. The Creed emphasizes leadership and service to others.
