Auburn Tigers – I know this one doesn’t need much explaining or comment. The annual clash between Alabama and Auburn, while technically not the longest running rivalry game in the deep south, it is definitely one of the most intense. The term “Iron Bowl” was coined by Auburn’s legendary coach, Ralph “Shug” Jordan in the early 1950s. The nickname was a nod to Birmingham’s chief industry as the game was contested there from 1948 – 1989. The name stuck to this day. This year’s game will be held on Saturday, November 29th at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, AL.
Mississippi State Bulldogs – Much of this game’s significance revolves around proximity. Starkville and Tuscaloosa are only separated by 83 miles.
This game matchup doesn’t go quite as far back as “The Iron Bowl”, but it does date back 129 years. The first meeting was on October 24, 1896.
Alabama holds a slight edge in victories against the folks from Stark Vegas, 87-18-3, winning the last 16 straight. In all honesty, it’s hard to call this matchup a rivalry, but I know for a fact the students on both sides certainly do.
Tennessee Volunteers – The Crimson Tide and Volunteers started this ruckus all the way back in 1901. This has been a competitive series through the years. Alabama does own an advantage in their 106 meetings, 59-40 with 7 ties. Alabama also has the edge in the last 10 games 8-2.
Under Josh Heupel, however, the Vols are tough and very skilled. They won this game last year, 24-17, in Knoxville.
Going into this year’s matchup both teams have only 1 loss and they are both ranked in the top 15.
