I’ve made no secret that I don’t believe Brian Kelly belongs in the SEC.
I was a casual observer of his career, like everyone else, when he was at Cincinnati and Notre Dame. However, when he blew in to Baton Rouge, I remember thinking, “What?, Why?, What did do at either school to warrant one of the five best college coaching jobs in the country?” Check out my post “Brian Kelly Doesn’t Fit & Ole Miss” to see why I feel that way.
He is a terrible leader of young men. I went to college in Hattiesburg, MS at the time that a man named Ed Morgan was the mayor of Hattiesburg and I was fortunate enough to go to the same church as the mayor. Mr. Morgan had been a running back at the University of Alabama from 1966 – 1968 and would tell us stories of how coach Paul “Bear” Bryant would never miss an opportunity to teach the young men around him about something, not just football. “Mainly”, he said, “coach Bryant spoke about leadership and responsibility”.
I don’t see this happening at LSU with Brian Kelly. Granted, I’m not around the program 24/7 or anything, however, it is documented that if he doesn’t get his way, he acts like a petulant child. On the Netflix documentary series “SEC Football: Any Given Saturday, he says “If you want to come out here and go half speed, go ahead. I’m going fucking in! Is that clear? If you guys wanna go half-speed, let me know now. You’re wasting my time. Get your asses going!” To me, this is a man that is telling college aged kids, that he is supposed to be mentoring, “If you don’t show the effort I want to see now, I’m going to take my ball and go home, maybe stomp my feet, and possibly hold my breath.”
And if all that isn’t enough, I feel like he’s a terrible head of an elite football program in the Southeastern Conference. When things go wrong he blames the players. “We didn’t execute…”, etc. and heaven help us if a member of the media presses him for an explanation regarding anything that went on during the game. His MO has been to throw a temper tantrum. Again, the petulant child.
Going into Saturday night’s game at home in Death Valley, the Tigers were still in the conversation regarding the 12 team FBS playoff. Then they were dismantled by Texas A & M in the second half of the game. They were outscored 35-7 over the final 30 minutes. Honestly, I felt like they looked awful the entire game. It’s what I’ve come to expect from LSU. At no point did I think they were going to pull this game off even when they were up at halftime 18-14.
I think it needs to be said that, while Texas A&M was motivated by a feeling of disrespect toward LSU for an issue in the coaching staff, there is a far larger consequence to all of this. The Aggies are without a doubt LSU’s biggest recruiting rival. They fight annually over the talent in southeast Texas and A&M is now winning that fight. I can’t help but feel like the Tigers could be in big trouble if they decide to stay the course with this coaching staff.
Soon after posting this piece, LSU announced that they had parted ways with Brian Kelly and they were finalizing the details of his $54-ish million buyout. And as you can possibly deduce from my words up above, in my opinion, not a moment too soon. So, for the third Sunday in a row, a major D-I coaching job has come available.
P.S. – In case you were wondering about the comparisons between the Big 10 (18) and the SEC, with three HC positions in the latter available, there’s not much talk about Penn State right now! They’re just gonna have to wait for the dust to settle in the southeast! ~ And cue the SEC hate! LOL!!
